Drowning in Chores? A Simple System to Take Back Control

I’ve been there—chores piling up, feeling like they’ll never end. Anyone feel like they just did laundry when they see a full hamper?

But don’t stress—it’s not like dust bunnies are plotting against you (probably). While stress won’t clean your home, a simple, well-oiled system will. Here’s how I tackle everyday tasks, and other tips to help you win.

1. Write It All Down

List every chore on your mind. Getting it out of your head reduces mental clutter and helps you focus.

2. Use the 4D Method to Cut the Chaos

This method keeps your to-do list from spiraling out of control. For each task, decide whether to:

✅ Do it now – If it takes less than 5 minutes or is urgent.

Defer it – Schedule bigger tasks for a specific time.

🔄 Delegate it – Can someone else take this on?

❌ Drop it – Is it truly necessary?

3. Staying on Top of Chores with a Smarter Routine

  • Daily 15-Minute Power Sessions – Set a timer and get through as much as possible. Short bursts prevent chores from piling up.

  • Theme Your Days – Laundry on Mondays, Deep Clean on Wednesdays, Declutter Fridays—assign tasks to specific days for easier upkeep if you prefer more structure.

  • Habit Stack – Pair small chores with daily routines (e.g., wipe the counter while waiting for coffee to brew).

  • Visual Cues – If you need a quick reminder, leave a visual cue in an area you commonly frequent such as a sticky note or basket.

4. Make It Less Miserable

Why not turn your chores into fun challenges? Perhaps try to beat your own highscore for fastest time to fold all those clothes.

I personally like to listen to sermons or audiobooks when I’m in full-on cleaning mode. That or I’ll see how much I can get done in a time crunch. You might also catch me singing like a Disney princess while washing the dishes.

If you’re the kind that is motivated by rewards, planning a relaxing spa time or tasty treat after getting serious work done is a great way to power through your tasks.

5. Free Up Your Time

Share the load – If you live with others, don’t carry all the weight. Split tasks fairly based on time, effort, or preference—everyone benefits from a clean space. Consider setting up a rotating schedule, assigning specific responsibilities, or tackling chores together to make them faster (and maybe even fun).

Outsource strategically – If possible, offload time-consuming tasks like meal prep, laundry drop-off, or house cleaning. Even outsourcing just one recurring task can free up mental space and energy for more important things. You can look for budget-friendly options like bulk meal kits, or cleaning services for occasional deep cleans.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Even when life feels like a constant game of catch-up, setting up these systems now will make things easier in the long run—helping you break free from survival mode.

Try different methods and see what sticks. Everyone’s routine looks different, so find what works best for you. You’ve got this.
